#68 -- Another Busy but Fun Week

Another big week has come and gone.  They seem to come and go so fast.  It's hard to believe that we only have just over 5 weeks until we finish and yet it will be so good to get home.  However, we still manage to find some new experiences.

We'll start with chance meetings at the Visitors' Center.  We're sitting on the bench in front of the Visitors' Center and talking with a couple of ladies.  Both of them have husbands named Dennis.  One of the ladies mentions that her husband has been to Martin's Cove several times and that he worked for the Church Education System.  She mentions that her last name is Ray.  Elder Smart says, "Dennis Ray?"  He then asks if this Dennis Ray served a mission and if so where?  She says that he served in Australia.  Elder Smart asks if he has a twin and if his home town is Grace, Idaho.  His wife is dumbfounded to think that Elder Smart knows so much about her husband.  Her husband returns about this same time and they recognize each other as missionary companions some fifty years ago.

Today there was another meeting between Elder Smart and friends from the old Cannon 7th Ward.  Elder Smart met Rhonda Redding and her grown children.  Her husband, Larry had grown up in the 7th Ward and his dad was Joe Redding.  Larry had helped Elder Smart with a welfare problem when Elder Smart had served as Bishop of the Cannon 3rd Ward.

Small world!

We'll also mention an exciting time in the office this week.  We were sitting at our desks busily working away.  Outside it was thundering and lightening.  Just outside our office there is a porch with two screen doors.  Elder Smart heard a commotion on the porch, looked out the window and saw a dog that grabbed the screen and pulled it off.  The dog then squeezed through a raised glass panel in the door and ran to a corner of the porch.  Elder Smart went out and coached the dog outside.  He then went in and put a large chair in front of the screen door.  That dog went around to the other porch door, pulled the screen off it, and squeezed back in, going to the same corner.  We tried to find the owner thinking that they were visitors at the homestead, to no avail.  We took a picture of the dog and sent it to some of the local ranchers.  One of the ranchers responded and said the dog had come from a nearby ranch, nearly 10 miles away.

On Friday and Saturday we had dinners with the missionaries at Martin's Cove.  Friday we provided dinner for our local neighbors and about 40 friends showed up from Alcova.  We also provided some entertainment.  We have people that can play the flute, violin, harmonica, accordion, and guitar.  We have a cowboy poet and some pretty good singers.

Entertaining Missionaries

Saturday we were fed by a family from Casper that simply love Martin's Cove and the missionaries.  They put on a great feed and this is the second year they have done it.

Last Sunday, August 12th, our missionary presidency was changed.  Elder Thomas Paul and Jay Bowden were released as counselors.  Elder Johns and Lewis were sustained as new councilors.

We both spent a fair amount of time working on a mission yearbook.  We hope to have it printed before any of our missionaries return home in early September.

Better bring this to a close for this week.  Congratulations to Jace and Andrew who have birthdays this week.

We are getting excited to see everyone.  We love you all and want you to know that although we miss you, we love serving and know the Gospel is true.

Last 3 Treks of the Season,( Probably) #67

What a change in atmosphere here.  It is much more relaxed since we are not swimming in treks.  We had only 3 treks here this week.  Sister Smart was a trek host for one of them.  She enjoyed her last trek of the season with the Tully Park Ward from Boise, Idaho.

We enjoyed dinner out on our P day.  One of the eating places we will miss is Pizza Ranch.  It is a pizza + smorgasbord.  We like that we can order any pizza we want to add to the smorgasbord.

Family Home Evening this week was fun.  We played the "old people game".

Saturday the office people were invited to have lunch at the Sun Family ranch home.  We have gotten to know Tina Sun a little this past year.  She has opened up to the missionaries a little.  We think she trusts us and is no longer afraid of us.  Hopefully time will open her heart more.

It has been a HOT week.  I understand that Utah has been even hotter this week.  Is it possible?

This Wyoming native has figured out how to stay cool when walking.

We had the Presiding Bishop, Bishop Caussé, visit Martin's Cove with his family.  We were blessed to hear him share his testimony with us on Sunday.

Elder Smart has been helping Sister Sigmon on Sunday Evenings that we are not working in the visitors' center.  Since Sister Smart has to be with him in the office while they work, she has been doing the blog during that time.

Time is flying by.  We are starting to train the new office people.  Leaving our responsibilities in the office might be one of the hard things about leaving here.

We love you all and we have loved serving the Lord here.  Serving on our missions has been such a blessing to us and we pray our families recognize their blessings as we serve.

Love,

Happy Birthday this week to Jace and Andrew!

Last Big Week #66

Just another old week -- or was it.  A lot of it was as usual -- the office work, the Visitors' Center, the morning devotionals, etc.  But there were some unusual activities as well.

On Wednesday, Sister Smart, along with Sister L. Taylor hosted a trek group from the Nibley 12th Ward.  Sister Smart really enjoys these and she does such a good job leading them.  The next three pictures are from this trek.

Leaving Martin's Cove

Since we spend a good amount of our time in the office, we caught this picture of Elder Smart leaving President and Sister Pace's Office.

Another of  our assignments is to staff the Trek Center.  Here we send off treks on their experiences.  We welcome them by showing a video about what happened here.  We have them sing "The Fire of the Covenant," and we do a little presentation on conditions here when the handcarts arrived here on November 4th, 1856.  We also do a short vignette on Patience Loader and then send them off.

Since most people have not heard of the song just mentioned, we'll say that the first verse is about the saints that left England to immigrate.  The second verse is about the rescuers who came from Salt Lake to rescue these struggling pioneers.  The third verse is about the youth of today and the future.  Great song!

When the treks finish there treks, they come back to the Trek Center and we show another video called "Remember."  Its objective is to send them off with the encouragement that they remember the way they felt during the time they spent with us.

When we sent off the Aurora, Colorado Stake we notice a number of Tongans in the group.  Elder Smart welcomed them back with the traditional Tongan greeting and they loved it.  They asked if they could have their picture taken with him.

Another great event this week was the visit of Elder and Sister LeGrande Curtis of the Seventy.  He was here to tour the mission and give the missionaries instruction.  Needless to say, we had some great meeting with them, including a nice Friday night dinner.

Once again, we'll end by saying how much we love our mission and the opportunity of serving.  We also dearly look forward to seeing family again.  Guess it won't be too much longer.  President walked out of his office and into ours.  We were surprised to have him give us a release date!

Our love to all of you,
